Downsizing vs. rightsizing: what’s the difference?
Downsizing usually means moving to less space. Rightsizing means choosing a home and a set of belongings that fit the life you want now. You might do both, or rightsize without moving to a smaller home.
A smaller home can mean less to maintain, but square footage is only one part of the choice. Think about how you want to spend your days, who you want nearby, and what you want to keep within reach. A retirement move might trade unused rooms for a home with easier access to friends and activities. Another family might keep the same size home but change the layout or what they store there. The right answer belongs to the person making the move.
Before comparing homes, make two lists: what your current home makes easier and what it makes harder. Then note which belongings should come with you, which need more thought, and who may help with each next step.
